December 2009 Newsletter

November’s Meeting: Tonight’s meeting was an exciting event. We had the privilege of honoring two of our original founders. Garth Isom, this years president brought Dell Stout, and Verdell Hinton in front of the group, clip_image008and honored them for the heritage they have left us with. They were then presented a medallion from the National Organization, clip_image002and a beautiful plaque also from National. They were then introduced by a mutual relative, Steve Stout, then given time to tell their story. It was most fascinating. Their stories were recorded digitally, and if there are any who would like a copy of their remarks, if they will bring a CD to David Hinton’s Home, he will burn a copy of them for you.

The story of the history of the founding the Hurricane Valley SUP clip_image006was most interesting, especially knowing that Verdell was the original SUP Medallion 2009founding member, having joined the SUP in Sacramento California. Dell’s Recap of his life in Hurricane was poignant and heartwarming. He told of many of those who had played a part in his life, forming the way he wanted to live his life. We are grateful for these two men, who have played such a huge part in the development of our Hurricane Valley SUP Chapter. Some of their accomplishment are recorded below.

December’s Meeting: Please come to our Christmas Dinner that will be held on December 5, 2009. Take note of the place, it will be different than before. We will meet at the New Hurricane Intermediate School that is located just north of the Hurricane Stake Peach Orchard on 700 West and 1325 South. The Sons of Utah Pioneers, Hurricane Valley Board of Directors, will provide dinner. They may ask for your help in the preparation of the food. David Isom will be the chief Cook. Our Christmas dinners have been wonderful in the past, and this year will be no different. The cost will be $7.50 a person.

Dinner Robert HorrocksWe would like to have this Christmas Dinner be our recruiting dinner, and encourage you to bring a friend(s). The cost will be $7.50 for them as well. There will be fine dining, and entertainment, as well as a video of the treks we have gone on this year, that will also include a pictorial history of the Hurricane Valley from 1904 to the present. Also, this is the evening we will swear in our new board for the 2010 year. We would like to give our heart felt thanks to Garth Isom who has been our president this year. He has worked diligently to make sure we had an eventful year. Our congratulations to all of the rest of this year board for their hard work.

A reminder that National Dues have gone from $30.00 to $50.00 for next year. Also, for those who have thought about becoming life members, that has been $300.00, but in January is going to $500.00. This would be a good time to think about becoming a life member. If you pay $150.00 now, and $150.00 next year, you can get your life membership for $300.00, but that 1st 150 dollars would have to be taken care of before December 31st this year. There is also a $15.00 local due as well. Our local has not gone up.

October:  Mormon_Battalion_Ed_Fraughton Nick Scholzen, Johnny Johnson, &… came to the SUP and told us the history of the P1080237 Mormon Battalion Organization. The group was organized to help us remember what the Mormon Battalion accomplished, not only for themselves, but also for the rest of the saints who were leaving Winter Quarters and traveling to the Salt Lake Valley. At first, they were a part of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers, but after a short time it was determined that it would be better if they became their own entity, and the rest is history.

It was interesting to note that this venture was a joint agreement between the U.S. Government and Brigham Young as a way to help provide the much-Buffalo Skull 2needed finances to allow the saints to cross the plains. These valiant men  entered military service without the benefit of uniforms so that those savings Battalionmapwould allow the church to prepare to come west. In all, before the venture was over,  more than $70,000 dollars was sent to the church leadership to help pave the way for their migration. This trek was nearly 2,000 miles to California, and before it was all over, some of the men had traversed 4,000 miles or more. It is known as the longest march in U.S. History, and perhaps the longest march of its kind in the history of the world.

When the Battalion entered the City of Santa Fe, they were introduced to the idea of irrigation, and they also learned that the wheat the saints were transporting to the Salt Lake Valley was the wrong kind for planting, and which kind of wheat was the right kind. A small contingent of soldiers, women and children who had been ill were sent to join the main body of the saints, and this information was dispensed there.

Before the Batalion (the original spelling) left the main body of the saints, Brigham Young called them all together. He promised them that if they lived their lives as the Lord would have them, the only battle they would have would be with wild beasts, and that none of them would die by the hand of the enemy they were called to fight. During their long march, they had no confrontation with the enemy, but did have a battle they called the “Battle of the Bulls.” Some of the Battalion were also the ones who discovered Gold at Sutter’s Mill, and because of the way they lived their lives, were also probably responsible for Johnston’s Army reconciling with the saints later, rather than fighting to obtain the Salt Lake Valley.

There were quite a few mementos exhibited of swords, a flag, a buffalo head skull neckerchief that they present to eagle scouts, guns, maps and books. In all, the night was a great success. The food was delicious, and the company grand. Thanks again to the Dixie Chapter of the Mormon Battalion.

At the beginning of the meeting, Durward Wadsworth was introduced as a new member of the board for the upcoming year, and Darwin Leavitt was presented as our new President Elect for the coming year.

November: Our meeting for November will feature two members of our group who have been huge in our development as a chapter. They were both part of the original group of men who formed this organization in Hurricane, and both served for many years on the board of directors. We should mention here that this meeting will be held on a Thursday rather than a Wednesday to allow for one of these members to come. Please come and help us honor these great men from the Hurricane Valley! The date will be Thursday, November 19th, at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall. It will be pot-luck.

peachdaysWe would like to thank all of you who rode on the Ron Simkins & Garth Isom familiesfloat with us. It was a fun way of advertising the S.U.P. Our congratulations to Lloyd and LaNorma Sandberg who weMr. & Mrs. Lloyd Sandbergre the Grand Marshalls of the Peach Days parade. We are glad that you are members of our group and wish you well in the future.

We would also like to thank those who helped in the root beer booth. It was a lot of fun and we sold a lot of root beer. Some customers even told us that we were one of the one of the big reasons that they enjoy Peach Days! They said that our root beer is wonderful! We would like to especially thank Devon Armstrong for setting up the booth and taking care of making the root beer. He spent the whole year looking for specials for the items we needed at the booth. His efforts made the Root Beer project a big success.

Also, from September 17th thru the 19th the National SUP held their convention in Ogden, Utah. Garth Isom and David Hinton were there for the Nat’l Training. The training took place at the Ogden Tabernacle which is on the Ogden Temple grounds, or vice versa, as the tabernacle has been there since 1957. Here are just a few pictures from the training session.

August’s Event: Our August 19th meeting at the American Legion hall will be one that will long be remembered. P1070414 Lee Beatty gave a presentation of his ancestry from a man named John Lathrop down to his father Don Beatty. He informed us P1070415that his named used to be pronounced “Batty”, but after a meeting of some of his ancestors, they called themselves Beattys not “Battys”. The person that he chose to elaborate on was Elijah Knapp Fuller. Lee’s presentation was very interesting, and at times spellbinding as he talked about various experiences of his progenitors. There was plenty to eat, and very good company. For those who were not able to attend, you missed a great time.

2009 July’s Activity: Bright and early on the morning of July 24th, a group of SUP IMG_6394members gathered at the American Legion Hall  IMG_6327 to gather tables an d chairs and a television. It was still dark as we set these up at the city park in preparation for the Pioneer Day breakfast we were going to serve. Pancake batter was stirred, sausage was warmed that had been cooked the night before, and batter was poured onto the grills. It was interesting to see the pattern of activity. There were several periods of rush, rush, rush, then short periods where there was a lull, then back to work. All in all, the morning was a great success! Many were fed, and the morning activities went well. We also had a television set up to show a short video of some of the treks that we have been on with the SUP during the past two years.IMG_6399

Our sympathy goes out to the Reeve family, and our bestYes Marilyn, I took it wishes for a complete recovery go to Alice. Also, on August 4th, one of our members, Floyd Wilkinson, lost his sweetheart of 50 years to cancer. We extend our deepest regrets  and wish him well. Marilyn was a joy to be around, and blessed the lives of all she touched. Her positive attitude was contagious. God bless you, Floyd. Lavar McAllister is still recovering, and his family seems to be recovering as well.
