January’s Meeting:
What an interesting time we had last month. Our dinner meeting got off to a less than wonderful
start with some confusion as to what time the meeting was to begin. The mix-up actually benefited some, who thought the meeting was going to start at 6:00 p.m. but ran a little late. What a surprise, and relief to them to get there and find that it hadn’t started yet. Some had thought the meeting started at 6:30 p.m., and as it turned out, that is when we actually got started. To try and end this confusion, the board has decided that all of our dinner events will begin at 6:30 from this point on.
The meeting was wonderful. The meal was great and the conversation excellent, but when our speakers were introduced, the fun began. Garth Isom was in charge of this meeting because he is the board member of memorializing our ancestors. He had asked Wayne Edwards, Don Tait and David Isom to help him as each gave a brief excerpt from the lives of four men that our chapter had memorialized to this point.
Garth told us that memorializing someone was quite easy, and if we had anyone that we would like
to memorialize, he would be happy to help us get it done. Once the work had been done, the short biography would be sent to National SUP Headquarters where that persons name would be inscribed on a plaque, and the history would be filed where anyone could come and research them. Elder M. Russell Ballard told the SUP that what we were doing was a vital function, and complimented us, saying we were the only organization outside the church that was doing such a thing. So, once again, we encourage you to look to your ancestry and see if there is anyone you would like to memorialize. The expense is minimal. For the head of house the initial expense is $35.00, and for each member thereafter is $15.00.
Februarys Event:
This will be held on the 17th of February, a Wednesday Evening, at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, and will be pot-luck. David Isom will be the presenter, and will be giving us a history of a small community that has long since disappeared from the pages of Southern Utah history. That town was called Mountain Dell, and actually home to many who helped build the canal. Without the canal we would not have the city of Hurricane. Growing up in Hurricane, I knew about Duncan’s Retreat and Grafton, but had never heard of Mountain Dell until just a few short years ago. So, come! Come and learn about an interesting era of Southern Utah that has long been forgotten

Help Needed: At the time of Peach Days, the SUP has always had a booth set up to sell Root Beer, and have done very well with it. We have gotten response from fair goers that we are one of the reasons they like to come to the fair. The booth takes a great deal of planning and hard work. We have had several capable people chair this over the last several years. We are looking for one of our members who would be willing to take this responsibility on for this year. If you would be interested, please contact either Larry LeBaron 635-2080 or Garth Isom 635-0488. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
