March Event: The evening was pleasant and enjoyable. There was plenty of food, and camaraderie as we ate, and then listened to Carl Wadsworth tell us about the construction of the Hurricane Canal, and the challenges of keeping the canal in good condition.
Although we have heard the history of the canal a number of times, Carl put a few twists into the telling that were new. It caused us to think a little differently about the struggle of building the canal.
He talked about putting the water into the canal for the first time and finding that the canal didn’t hold water very well. He explained that as the floods came down the river, the muddy water flowed through the canal and plugged the cracks that previously had been leaking.
As he told the story of the Ditch Riders, it helped all of us to appreciate more deeply the struggle of keeping the town of Hurricane supplied with water. He explained how difficult it was to repair the ditch when there were breaks in it, especially when rockslides ripped open the sides of the flumes. Many new insights were gained as we listened to this riveting story. Thank you Carl for your presentation.
Because these people will be our guests, we ask that you bring a double portion of what you are making for pot-luck so there will be enough food. This event will be held on Wednesday, April 21st at the American Legion Hall, at 6:30 p.m.
For Your Information: A new chapter of the SUP is now organized in St. George! The Cotton Mission Chapter has given birth to the new Dixie Encampment Chapter of St. George. Wayne Pace, a long time members of the SUP is on the Cotton Mission Board, and volunteered to organize this new chapter. It was started with 44 new members coming from Ivins, Santa Clara, St. George, and Bloomington. Dil Strausser our National President was here to hand out the original members certificate, Articles and By-laws.
Help Needed: At the time of Peach Days, the SUP has always had a booth set up to sell Root Beer, and have done very well with it. We have gotten response from people that we are one of the reasons they like to come to the fair. The booth takes a great deal of planning and hard work. We have had several capable people chair this over the last several years. We are looking for one of our members who would be willing to take this responsibility on for this year. If you would be interested, please contact either Larry LeBaron 635-2080 or Garth Isom 635-0488. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
