May Newsletter 2010

P1080865 April’s Event: Last month’s meeting went very well. There were 71 people in attendance with 43 guests and 28 of our members and their spouses. Durward Wadsworth was in charge of the meeting since he supervised the essay contest from the beginning.

This contest was designed to give 4th grade students in the area a chance to get acquainted with their ancestors. We asked 4th graders to do this because part of their curriculum was studying Utah history. We asked them to select one of their ancestors at least two generations apart from them. They were to read their history, then write an essay on who this ancestor was and what he or she did in life. We wanted to know what appreciation this student felt for his or her ancestor. We believe that this activity helped students look at their heritage and begin to understand what a grand part of history they came from. Over the years it has been a very satisfying experience. We thank Durward for his dedication and hard work in bringing this opportunity to our young pioneers.

We had 15 winners from around the valley. They were: Kelbie Dalyle, Brooklyn Hall, Levi Webb, Rebecca Peck, Emilee Wann, Cheya Leitner and Emily Stewart from the Hurricane Elementary; Savannah Stevens, Ethan Lenz, Halli Gubler, Kylee Stevens, Savannah Perkins, Dylan Videla, Austin Wilson and MaKayla Willard from the LaVerkin Elementary.

Each of these winners received: $15.00 in gold Sacagawea dollars , a bronze SUP medallion, several uncirculated Lincoln pennies and a certificate of participation. The overall winner, Savannah Stevens, received a plaque from the Hurricane Valley Chapter of the SUP.

May’s Activity: On May 15th we will be going on the Ghoul’s Corral Trek There we will learn the history of a business that was the largest in the world at the time, in the late 1800’s to the early 1920’s. Come with us as we learn about another area of our Southern Utah history that has almost disappeared from the pages of history. Victor Hall will be our presenter.  We will all meet at the Shearing Corral site at 5:30 p.m., for our pot-luck dinner. Tables will be provided to put the food, but you should bring your own chairs and eating utensils, plus a lap top table if you have one. As you start up the hill going to Apple Valley, it is 3 miles to the exit off the highway. Take a right, and drive 3 miles to the next turn and keep to the right again, and the site is just .2 of a mile from there on the right.

Help Needed: At the time of Peach Days, the SUP has always had a booth set up to sell Root Beer, and has done very well with it. We have gotten response from people that we are one of the big reasons they like to come to the fair. The booth takes a great deal of planning and hard work. We have had several capable people chair this over the last several years. We are looking for one of our members who would be willing to take this responsibility on for this year. If you would be interested, please contact either Larry LeBaron 635-2080 or Garth Isom 635-0488. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Treks:

1. This is the Place Park Trek: will take place in August. This park is one that is kept up by the Church and is well worth the time to attend. Across the street from Hogle Zoo, you will find activities for the entire family. The activities help people understand the difficulties pioneers had in just sustaining life, plus the simple things they did to entertain themselves. Your family will surely get a flavor of the pioneer lifestyle.

Don’t forget our own local Treks:

June 12th as we go to the Parowan Gap (this is a date change,Sunset through the Gap please take note.) and see one of the world’s best kept petroglyphs known as “Newspaper Rock”. This should prove to be an informative and positive experience. Join us as Robert Heaton takes us through the Iron Mission, then on to the Parowan gap and to the Little Salt Lake. We will begin this trek in the parking lot of the Zion’s Bank in Hurricane at 9:00 a.m. on the 12th, and finish with lunch in  Parowan. There will be a cost of $5.00 for each lunch.
