June’s Activity: Our group gathered at Zion’s Bank’s parking lot Saturday morning of the 12th, and headed north to Cedar City where our first stop was the Iron Mission, now know as the “Frontier Homestead State Park Museum. We spent nearly a hour going through the museum, finding the many carriages stored there fascinating. The blast furnace in back was an interesting item, and making bricks out of clay, sand and straw with a wooden form was fun.
We left the museum with Robert Heaton, who took us to the Parowan gap. He told us a little of the history, then let us walk through the gap looking at the petroglyphs and taking pictures. It was intriguing not only to look at the petroglyphs, but to see so many of them. Some were etched so they were easy to see, and others seemed to be of much older date, and could barely be seen. There was a cave entrance that had been blocked up inside, that had several petroglyphs.
After perusing the Parowan Gap for a time, we decided to have lunch there, so Wayne and Margene Edwards brought out the fixings for lunch, and we were able to make a wonderful sub-sandwich. After lunch Brother Heaton took us to a place that has dinosaur tracks. They were interesting. Below are a few of the pictures from our trek.
I have many more pictures, but these are just a few. If anyone would like me to do a CD with the pictures on them, I would be happy to do so. The petroglyphs at the “Gap” were awesome, and many. I have only given you a brief idea of what they were like.
July’s Event: This will be our pioneer day annual morning breakfast at the city park as we commemorate the pioneers coming into the Salt Lake Valley. Of course, this will be on the 24th, and we will be serving up pancakes and sausage with a drink. Please come and support us at this event. The money we make will go for scholarships at the high school, so your sustaining us on this day will be greatly appreciated.
Help Needed: At the time of Peach Days, the SUP has always had a booth set up to sell Root Beer, and has done very well with it. We have gotten response from people that we are one of the big reasons they like to come to the fair. The booth takes a great deal of planning and hard work. We have had several capable people chair this over the last several years. We are looking for one of our members who would be willing to take this responsibility on for this year. If you would be interested, please contact either Larry LeBaron 635-2080 or Garth Isom 635-0488. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
